Introduction
Violence, bullying, and abuse are significant issues affecting communities, schools, organisations, and workplaces. The Canadian Red Cross provides awareness and prevention courses to help reduce these problems. Their programme outlines ten key steps you can take to foster a safer environment. Remember, everyone has the power to create change using these valuable resources.
The Ten Steps
1. Understand the Problem
Gain a full understanding of interpersonal violence globally. The Red Cross identifies violence as a “Great Humanitarian Challenge” impacting vulnerable groups, especially women and children. Recognise the various types and causes of violence affecting individuals and communities.
2. Recognise Vulnerability and Resilience
Violence affects all demographics, but some groups—such as children and the elderly—are at greater risk. Learn how individuals and communities can recover and build resilience against violence, bullying, and abuse.
3. Define Protection Instruments
Identify resources and legal protections available. Most countries have laws safeguarding people from violence, particularly vulnerable populations. International regulations also play a role in protection.
4. Create a Protection Team
Prevention requires action. Form a team within your organisation, school, workplace, or community to address violence, bullying, and abuse proactively.
5. Complete a Risk Assessment
Assess your environment to identify risks and potential consequences. Use mapping and assessment tools to understand and prevent violence, bullying, and abuse.
6. Develop Policies and Procedures
Change starts with robust policies. Leaders must ensure proper procedures are in place, including personnel screening and policies on conduct, harassment, and protection of minors and vulnerable individuals.
7. Educate Adults, Youth, and Children
Education is key. Implement prevention programmes led by knowledgeable individuals in schools, organisations, and workplaces to raise awareness and foster change.
8. Respond to Disclosures
When someone discloses violence, bullying, or abuse, respond appropriately. Adults have specific legal obligations, especially when children are involved. Guidance is available to help respond effectively and supportively.
9. Meet the Challenges
After recognising the issues and forming a prevention team, put your plan into action. Overcoming barriers requires determination and teamwork.
10. Maintain Safe Environments
Safety is an ongoing commitment. Continue to monitor and maintain safe environments even after initial issues have been addressed.
