Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) course is designed to include the fundamentals of WHMIS, including hazard identification, supplier and workplace labels, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and worker responsibilities. The course equips participants with the knowledge to safely handle, store, dispose and work with hazardous materials in the workplace.
Note: Employers must supplement this online training course with workplace-specific training to ensure workers are aware of hazards associated with the controlled products they use and know how to work safely with those products.
Course meets the legislated worker training requirements for all federal and provincial workplaces in all provinces and territories.
Who Should Take the Course?
Participants working near or with hazardous materials must complete WHMIS training.

The primary objective of this course is to equip participants with the skills to safely handle WHMIS controlled products.
Course Delivery Options
- This online course is self-paced. Participants may leave the course at anytime and can resume where they left off by simply logging back into their account and navigating to their last completed section. On-line learning time will vary depending on the learner.
- Traditional Classroom provides an in-person, interactive experience where participants gain WHMIS knowledge and have an opportunity to practice their skills with support of an instructor.

Evaluation Process
At the end of each module, there is a quiz. Participants must successfully complete the quiz before continuing to the next module. Participants that do not achieve 100% can review the module content and try as many times as necessary to advance and complete the course. Additional support resources are available upon request.

Who Should Take the Course?
Individuals and organization who have a duty to respond to emergencies in the workplace, i.e. Industries would be preferable as they have space and large numbers of staff, security guards, manufacturers, construction companies
Evaluation Process
This 4-hour WHMIS training program is facilitated using a Leaner-Centered Approach. Various teaching aids (PowerPoint, video, small group discussion) are used throughout to enhance participant learning. Prior to course completion participants are required to write a short quiz.

Course Content
1. Introduction to WHMIS:
- Purpose and scope of WHMIS.
- Legislative framework and worker rights and responsibilities.
- Overview of WHMIS 2015 (which aligns with the Globally Harmonized System or GHS).
2. Hazard Identification:
- Understanding different hazard classes and categories (e.g., flammable, corrosive, toxic).
- Recognizing WHMIS pictograms and their associated hazards.
- Learning about the different hazard groups and classes under WHMIS 2015.
3. Supplier Labels and Workplace Labels:
- Components of supplier labels and workplace labels.
- Distinguishing between supplier labels and workplace labels.
- Understanding the information required on both types of labels.
- Exemptions for small containers and outer containers.
4. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)/Safety Data Sheets (SDS):
- Purpose and importance of SDS.
- Locating and understanding information on SDS.
- Identifying key sections of an SDS, such as hazard identification, first aid measures, and handling and storage information.
5. WHMIS Responsibilities:
- Roles and responsibilities of suppliers, employers, and workers.
- Understanding the importance of training and education.
- Knowing how to report incidents and spills.
6. Emergency Procedures:
- Knowing how to respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials.
- Understanding the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Knowing how to access emergency contact information.
