First Aid & CPR Instructor Course

The Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor course prepares and certifies instructors to deliver First Aid and CPR training in learner-centred environments. The programme adopts an individualised approach, emphasising injury prevention, accommodating different learning styles, and utilising varied instructional techniques tailored to participants’ abilities, ages, and needs. Instructors are equipped to support each participant’s unique pace of progress.

There are five steps to becoming a Red Cross First Aid & CPR Instructor. 

Instructor pathway 5 steps.

STEP 1: PREREQUISITES & SKILLS EVALUATION

  • Participants must be at least 18 years old and provide proof of valid Standard First Aid CPR/AED Level C certification.
  • Candidates are expected to possess strong skills and knowledge prior to the skills evaluation session.
  • Participants with current Standard First Aid/CPR certification may attend a free 1-Day SFA CPR/AED C Blended or Re-certification course with VO2 Health Focus to review and practise their skills before attending the in-class skills evaluation session.
Completion Criteria

Candidates must successfully pass the required skills evaluation before they can proceed to Step #2.

Required Teaching Aids

Discipline specific skill evaluation sheets – made available during in-class session (hardcopy or electronic).

STEP 2: FUNDAMENTALS OF INSTRUCTION

This consists of an online component, where candidates learn the fundamentals of instruction, and a classroom component, where they apply the fundamentals under the guidance of an Instructor Trainer.

  • Course Length (Minimum Teaching Hours): Online – Approximately 8 hours | Classroom- 14 hours 30 minutes
  • Minimum Instructor Trainer to Candidate ratio: 1:4
  • Maximum Instructor Trainer to Candidate ratio: 1:8
Completion Criteria:
  • Successfully complete the Fundamentals of Instruction Online component before beginning the 2-day in-classroom component of Step 2
  • Successfully complete the in-class microteaching segments provided by instructor trainer
  • Adhere to the Canadian Red Cross Standards of Behaviour and the Group Charter
  • Attend and participate in 100% of the course – this includes active, directed contributions at all scheduled sessions

STEP 3: DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC CLASSROOM COMPONENT

Participants will complete the in-class discipline-specific First Aid and CPR stream to enable them to teach (Red Cross Standard First Aid, Emergency First Aid & CPR).

  • Course Length (Minimum Teaching Hours): Classroom- 14 hours 30 minutes
  • Minimum Instructor Trainer to Candidate ratio: 1:4
  • Maximum Instructor Trainer to Candidate ratio: 1:8
Completion Criteria:
  • Successfully complete the in-class microteaching segments
  • Adhere to the Canadian Red Cross Standards of Behaviour and the Group Charter
  • Attend and participate in 100% of the course—this includes active, directed contributions at all scheduled sessions

STEP 4: TEACHING EXPERIENCE

The Teaching Experience consists of an online component and a classroom component. The online component details what to expect during your Teaching Experience and provides guidance on how to prepare for it. The classroom component offers the experience of teaching in a dynamic classroom environment.

  • Course Length (Minimum Teaching Hours): Online – Approximately 30-45 minutes Classroom – Candidates are required to co-facilitate with a TES on a live course Duration can vary as it is based on individual candidate’s competency (up to 3 attempts allowed)
  • Minimum Instructor Trainer to Candidate ratio: N/A
  • Maximum Instructor Trainer to Candidate ratio: N/A
Completion Criteria:
  • Successfully complete the “The Teaching Experience” – First Aid Programs (online component)
  • Successfully complete the classroom Teaching Experience
  • Adhere to the Canadian Red Cross Standards of Behaviour

STEP 5: CERTIFICATION

First Aid Instructor certifications are emailed by the Canadian Red Cross and will be issued when all elements of the training are complete and signed off by the assigned First Aid Instructor Trainer.

  • Valid for three years
  • Instructor Certification upon successful completion of Step #4

The price of the Frist Aid Instructor course includes all of the above course components. Upon successful completion, you will be qualified to deliver the following courses for a Training Partner of the Canadian Red Cross:

  • CPR/AED Levels A & C, including recertifications
  • Emergency First Aid with CPR/AED Levels A & C
  • Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Levels A & C, including recertifications
  • Marine Basic First Aid and CPR/AED Levels A & C
